When Your Body Is Tired But Your Brain Starts Doing Admin

By Bec McInnes

A simple bedtime come-down for nights when you cannot switch off

You finally sit down.

The house is quiet.

And the second your head hits the pillow, your brain suddenly decides now is the perfect time to start life admin.

Helpful.

Very normal.

Absolutely not the moment, thank you.

You are tired. Properly tired.

But suddenly your brain is replaying:

  • that text you forgot to reply to
  • what needs to go in tomorrow’s lunchboxes
  • whether you moved the washing over
  • the thing you said weirdly three years ago

Meanwhile your shoulders are still sitting up near your ears like it is 2pm.

Your body is exhausted, but your nervous system is still on duty.

What Is Actually Going On?

This is not a motivation problem.

It is not that you are bad at relaxing.

It is your nervous system.

All day your body has been:

  • holding everyone else together
  • making 74 tiny decisions
  • surviving mostly on reheated coffee and pure willpower
  • ignoring the fact you were tired hours ago
  • running from one thing to the next without a proper pause

Your body does not just switch off because the day technically ends.

Especially when it has spent the whole day bracing, rushing, responding and keeping everyone moving.

Right now, your body still thinks it is on duty.

Why Bedtime Can Feel So Annoying

This is the deeply rude part.

You can be exhausted all afternoon, counting down the minutes until bed.

Then bedtime arrives and your brain suddenly opens every tab it has been saving all day.

Tomorrow’s jobs.

Forgotten emails.

The school thing.

The dinner thing.

The washing thing.

The random thing that does not matter but apparently needs a full committee meeting at 10:43pm.

This is the tired-but-wired loop.

Your body wants rest, but your system has not been given a clear enough signal that the day is done.

You Do Not Need A Perfect Bedtime Routine

Please.

You do not need:

  • a 12-step sleep plan
  • a silent house
  • a candlelit personality change
  • an hour of stretching
  • to become someone who writes gratitude lists in matching pyjamas

You just need something simple enough to actually do.

Even when the kids took forever to go down.

Even when the house is a mess.

Even when you are already in bed and negotiating with yourself about whether brushing your teeth counts as cardio.

The 2-Minute Bedtime Come-Down

Try this before bed when your brain is busy and your body still feels braced:

  • Apply Dream Cream to your legs, feet, shoulders or neck
  • Take five slow breaths, box breathing style
  • Sit for one minute without immediately picking your phone back up
  • Drop your shoulders on purpose
  • Unclench your jaw while you are there too

I know.

Rude.

But let your body catch up for a second.

No full routine.

No pressure to do it perfectly.

Just a small signal that says:

We can stop now.

Where Magnesium Fits

Magnesium is involved in normal muscle and nervous system function, which is why it makes sense in a simple bedtime wind-down.

Not in a dramatic “knock you out” way.

We are not making fairy dust claims here.

But in a practical, body-led way.

Most people are not looking for complicated.

They are looking for something that helps their body soften a little.

Something that helps their shoulders stop gripping.

Something that gives the nervous system a cue that the sprint is over.

Small, repeatable, realistic support.

That is the sweet spot.

For Nights Like This

You do not need to overhaul your whole night.

You do not need to become a different person.

You just need a few small things that help your body realise:

Okay. We can stop now.

And honestly?

Sometimes that tiny shift is enough to make the whole next day feel a bit more manageable.

Shop Dream Cream

If this sounds like your nights lately, Dream Cream is the one we’d reach for. A soothing magnesium cream with sandalwood and bergamot, made for tired bodies, busy minds and bedtime wind-downs that fit into real life.
